Bis(monoacylglycerol)phosphate (BMP) is a phospholipid found in small amounts in various tissues and organs throughout the body, including the lungs, spleen and liver. It is also present in the cell membranes of some bacteria.
BMPs are negatively charged glycerophospholipids that are not present in high concentrations in most mammalian cells, but are found in much higher concentrations in cells such as macrophages. BMPs are often dysregulated in lysosomal storage disorders. Recent studies have shown that BMPs can serve as important biomarkers for the detection of metastatic cancer, certain lysosomal storage disorders, or drug-induced phospholipidosis.
