Degradable polymers are often referred to as biopolymers because most of these polymers are derived from various natural sources. However, there are few natural biodegradable biopolymers in nature. Among them, polylactic acid, PHA and starch are the most commonly used biopolymers. These most abundant and common biopolymers can be divided into three segments: polynucleotides biopolymers, polypeptides biopolymers, and polysaccharides biopolymers. In addition, there are polymers that do not belong to the above three types, which are polymers based on synthetic materials. Polymers based on synthetic materials are synthesized by chemical reaction of monomers derived from petroleum feedstocks, such as aliphatic or aromatic polyesters or copolyesters. They possess degradable properties similar to biopolymers and are also commonly used in drug development.
