3d-Nitrogen MOFs Linkers

The charged nitrogen-donating linkers are usually azoles, which are commonly used to prepare porous coordination polymers. The azolyl-rich ligands provide not only an energy source but also rich bridging modes for the 3D-enhanced structures. The physical dimensions (1D, 2D, and 3D) of high-energy MOF structures are closely related to sensitivity and performance, as high-dimensional structures will provide diversity of coordination modes and high structural stability. Compared to 1D and 2D architectures, 3D frameworks have the most rigid and enhanced structures due to the most complex coordination patterns, which further improves stability. In addition to physical size, the sensitivity of ligands can also affect the stability of energetic MOFs. Therefore, choosing more stable nitrogen-rich ligands to replace hydrazine and azide would be a favorable route to construct safer energetics. Among all nitrogen-rich ligands, the five-membered heterocyclic building block can generate higher heat of formation and is coordinated by abundant lone pair electrons on the ring. In addition, the effect of the azole ring can prolong the structure, resulting in multi-dimensionality. Therefore, high-performance MOFs can be obtained by using 3d-Nitrogen MOFs linkers as the composite material of MOFs.
